Shipping Course

We believe that a good education is the foundation of your career.

Only the Galbraiths Shipping Course, established in 1970, offers the opportunity for you to explore the broader shipping industry, while gaining detailed and comprehensive knowledge of key subjects at the same time.

The lectures are delivered by practicing shipping professionals who have been carefully selected for their skills and expertise.

The combination of a theoretical framework, together with valuable practical workshops and networking opportunities round off the experience and makes the Galbraiths Shipping Course truly unique and dynamic. The course will this year be celebrating its 50th anniversary, which is a testament to its ongoing success in delivering a high calibre shipping education.

The Galbraiths Shipping Course consists of five main modules, each building on and complementing the other. This structure allows delegates to gain a holistic overview of the maritime industry. The lectures in each module have been thoroughly planned so that course participants will gain a deep insight into each specific topic. In addition to lectures, workshops will enable delegates to bring theory to life and to practice and develop their newly learned skills.

Module 01: Shipping Foundations
This module lays the foundations upon which delegates can build. The sessions will provide a basic understanding of the ship, shipping as a business and strategy.

Module 02: Shipping Industries
Module 02 underpins the fundamentals of several key segments of the shipping industry and lecturers will provide up to date market overview. Lectures will cover areas including tanker shipping, dry cargo shipping, container shipping and more.

Module 03: Shipping Markets
In Module 03, the delegates will focus on various aspects of the shipping markets such as voyage estimations, chartering negotiations, forward freight agreements, sale & purchase activities and vessel recycling. Several workshops and competitions enhance the learning process.

Module 04: Ship Management & Operations
In this module, attention is given to managerial and operational issues including financing, insurance and P&I cover. The delegates will also follow the voyage of a ship to gain an understanding of practical on-board operations. A series of lectures will also consider the legal framework underpinning the shipping markets.

Delegate Presentation
Between Module 04 and Module 05, the delegates will give a group presentation to their peers and a panel of industry professionals. Throughout the course, delegates will benefit from dedicated sessions to research, prepare and practice the presentations. There is also the opportunity to receive training and advice on presentation skills and the use of presentation software.

Module 05: The Future
The final module will explore important regulatory issues and their potential effect on future vessel design. An exploration of future market trends in the newbuilding market and a consideration of the topical issue of cyber security rounds off the course.

In addition to standard lectures, the course will deliver value through discussions, debates and practical workshops, allowing delegates to share their knowledge and experience and provide the opportunity to develop wider skills in presenting and debating.
